Funding round – led by Crowberry Capital, Hilmar Veigar Petursson & Sisu Game Ventures brings the total investment in 1939 Games to over $5M, enabling further development of its WWII collectable card game KARDS

23rd April 2020, Reykjavik, Iceland – Independent game developer 1939 Games, today announced that it has secured a further $1.9 million investment to continue developing its newly released WWII digital collectable card game, KARDS. The funding comes from a collection of sources and brings the total investment in the game to over $5M. 1939 Games intends to use the money to develop future KARDS updates as well as deliver the much-requested mobile version of the CCG for true cross-platform play.

1939 Games was formed in 2015 by former CCP Games CEO Ivar Kristjansson and his brother Gudmundur Kristjansson who also worked at CCP for 12 years in various management positions. With a team of seasoned executives who have worked extensively on AAA titles, the studio’s first title, KARDS, has been attracting the attention of multiple investors since it was revealed. This second round of investment has been led by Icelandic VC fund Crowberry Capital,  CEO of CCP Games Hilmar Veigar Pétursson and Helsinki-based VC Sisu Game Ventures.

“This further round of funding is a reflection of the incredible success that KARDS has enjoyed since it first launched into Early Access a year ago.“ said Ivar Kristjansson, CEO 1939 Games. “This new investment enables us to continue delivering an amazing experience to our loyal fanbase in the form of even more cards and play modes as well as the mobile version that we anticipate to be a real game-changer.”

KARDS launched fully on PC on April 15 after a year in Early Access. The WWII themed free-to-play digital CCG has been a resounding success with fans, garnering over 6000 ‘very positive’ reviews as well as boasting over 200K total users since its Early Access launch, with 100K of these users active in the last week since the game’s full launch. During the Early Access phase, 1939 Games continued to add significant updates to the game including the massive Allegiance expansion, a Draft game mode and two new Ally nations – France and Italy. With a full future roadmap planned, the studio has plans for additional card sets and a single-player campaign mode, all of which will be free additions. A mobile version on Android and iOS is also in development, enabling players to continue the battle on the move through true cross-platform play.

KARDS is available to download for free now on Steam for PC, with the single-player campaign mode due to be released in June. The mobile version is expected in the Fall of 2020.

About 1939 Games

1939 Games was founded by Gudmundur and Ivar Kristjansson, brothers with over 25 years of games industry experience between them. With a shared interest in collectable card games and WWII, the duo wanted a game that combined their passions. When they couldn’t find one, they set out to make it themselves. KARDS is that game, a digital CCG (collectable card game) that uses historical military units as inspiration for its cards. Fusing traditional card game elements with WWII strategy, it is an elegant, action-packed experience that stands apart within the genre.
